Our Infectious Diseases Unit cares for people with a range of infectious diseases.
Our services
We treat a variety of infections with a special focus on complex infectious diseases including:
- malaria and other travel-related infections
- HIV/AIDS
- viral hepatitis
- meningococcus
- endocarditis
- fever of an unknown origin
- encephalitis
- meningitis
Special interests include:
- infections in the immunocompromised host
- bone, joint and prosthetic infections
- antibiotic therapy, especially outpatient parenteral therapy
- parasitology including scabies.
How to access this service
To access this service, your GP or medical practitioner will need to send a referral letter to the hospital.
If there is a waiting list, you will receive a confirmation letter and be advised on what to do next. If there is no waiting list, you will receive an appointment booking letter or we will contact you to arrange a suitable time for your appointment.

Health professionals
The Infectious Diseases Unit provides inpatient and outpatient services. Our inpatient consultation service is provided across the hospital. Outpatients can access our clinics in the unit and the Richard Kemp Day Therapy Unit.
Other services
Infection monitoring and prevention services
A comprehensive infection prevention and control program is available to help staff and patients minimise the risk of healthcare acquired infections. The consultancy and education service aims to ensure staff are updated and informed about infection control. GPs, community service providers and other hospitals are welcomed to access the consultancy and education service.
Workforce screening & vaccination service
Preventative immunisation for all staff at the hospital as well as specific patients on an as-needed basis.
Vascular access surveillance and education service
We provide expert support across the facility with regard to appropriate and safe vascular access.
Hospital in the Home Service (HITH)
Patients requiring intravenous antibiotic therapy are managed under the clinical governance of the Infectious Diseases Unit while other patients are transferred to Hospital in the Home Service under the governance of the general medicine physician.
Outpatient parenteral antibiotic therapy service
This service is for patients who are independent and not needing HITH admission but who require ongoing intravenous antibiotic therapy. We run this service through the Richard Kemp Day Therapy Unit.
Antimicrobial stewardship program
This program is designed to optimise the appropriate use of antimicrobials across the hospital through education, collaboration and a tiered antimicrobial approval policy using a web based approval process as a tool.
Statewide antimicrobial stewardship program
We host the Queensland Health sponsored program to support smaller facilities across the state optimise their own antimicrobial stewardship programs.
Sexual health and HIV Service
The Sexual Health and HIV Service is based at Biala on Roma Street in Brisbane with outreach clinics at Redcliffe Hospital and Caboolture Hospital providing specialised sexual health services.
