Keep seeing your GP

Gender Services

The Gender Service medical doctors (Endocrinologist and GPwSI) can only prescribe hormones if you have a GP who can continue to look after your gender-affirming care and general health once you have been discharged from the service.

Your regular GP should:

  • Look after all aspects of your health, including your gender-affirming care
  • Refer you to other health care providers in the community
  • Provide ongoing gender-affirming care, including:
    • Scripts for gender-affirming hormones
    • Monitoring hormone levels (with blood tests)
    • Monitoring cardiovascular risk factors and your general health

Please note when you are discharged from the Service, we provide your GP with information about your gender-affirming care and the monitoring that is required.

If you don’t feel your current GP is the right doctor to provide gender-affirming care:

  • The Gender Service can provide recommendations for gender-affirming GPs, including those who prescribe gender affirming hormones.
  • TransHub and AusPATH have information about how to find gender affirming GPs.
