The Royal Brisbane & Women’s Hospital Amputee Service, cares for people within Metro North Health who have had an amputation. Our aim is to help you reach your highest level of function and restore your ability to return to the things that are important to you.

Our service

Multidisciplinary Amputee Clinic (MDT)

Our Amputee MDT Clinic is made up of a team including Rehabilitation Doctors, Prosthetists, Physiotherapists, Podiatrist and Occupational Therapist.  This team is focused on:

  • Pre-operative assessment and education regarding amputation follow-up and prosthetic limbs
  • Assessment of new amputees for suitability to begin on a prosthetic limb
  • Assessment and management of issues impacting rehabilitation and use of a prothesis such as pain, swelling management and impacts of other medical conditions on progress
  • Assessment of suitability for ongoing prosthetic limbs funded by the Queensland Artificial Limb Service (QALS), National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS) and the Department of Veterans Affairs (DVA).
  • Assessment of WorkCover, Compulsory Third Party (CTP) or other compensable patients suitability for prosthetic use.
  • Periodic follow up with Amputees through the lifespan to ensure optimum functioning with a prosthetic limb is maintained

Physiotherapy Amputee Clinic

  • Pre-operative assessment and education regarding amputation, rehabilitation and follow-up
  • Post operative assessment and provision of early rehabilitation, exercise programs and compression
  • Mobility retraining post fitting of a prosthesis to maximise outcomes and return to function
  • Our Physiotherapists work in close consultation with the RBWH Prosthetic service (hyperlink to O+P)

How to access this service

To access this service you must reside within the Metro North Hospital and Health Service (MNHHS) catchment area or one of our outreach service areas. Your GP or medical practitioner will need to send a referral letter to the hospital.

You will receive an appointment offer letter and be advised on what to do next.

Please note, referrals are triaged and appointments will be provided to the most urgent cases first.
