The past few months have continued to be very eventful. We have had the Parliamentary Mental Health Select Committee deliver their report; the budget announcement and subsequent funding for the sector including Metro North Mental Health; and the Department’s Business Case for Change.
The ASPIRES Project Team were pleased to host the official Launch event for the Metro North Mental Health ASPIRES: Suicide, Self-Harm and Overdose Prevention Plan on Tuesday 21 June at The Prince Charles Hospital Education Centre.
Congratulations to Chris Henaway and Penny Dale for being awarded a Metro North Health Deadly Award at the recent MNMH Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Activities Showcase.
Dialectical Behaviour Therapy (DBT) recognises the impact of emotions and how they can influence thoughts and behaviours. The therapy aims to teach people how to manage their emotions and express them in helpful ways.
Often consumers and family members visiting PEC, comment on the white walls and sterile hospital feeling. They report it contributes negatively to their already fragile mental health and some question why we do not have any colour or “something to look at” on the walls.
Thank you kindly to all nurses, doctors and all co-workers and health professional. I really appreciate your help to keep me well while I am in hospital. Thank you from bottom of my heart.

For my final newsletter update for 2021 I would like to talk about several very important things.

In a previous update I congratulated the finalists of the 2021 Staff Excellence Awards with the promise of sharing the details of the winners. It is my pleasure to acknowledge and congratulate the following individuals and teams in their commitment to our Values in Action:
On the 30 November 2021 the Queensland's Health Minister Yvette D’Ath, announced a parliamentary inquiry into mental health. This inquiry has been welcomed by the sector and will look closely at the mental health system to identify long-term issues and demands as well as new concerns arising from COVID-19.

I have been back as the newly appointed Executive Director MNMH for just over two months now. It continues to be a very busy time and I am planning to get out to teams across Metro North to get to know more about your service areas on the ground.
The Collaborative for Allied Health Research, Learning and Innovation (CAHRLI) has supported Metro North Mental Health to recognise Allied Health led research, learning or innovation within our Directorate. We called for nominations in September 2021 and we are pleased to announce Catriona Harwood as the winner. Congratulations Cat!
At the Safe Space we support people to overcome distress by offering a calm, comfortable, and healing environment away from the emergency department, and with caring, clinical and peer support available.
