I am extremely pleased to announce our Metro North Clinician Research Fellows for 2022.
Congratulations to:
A/Prof Sandhir Prasad (Cardiology, RBWH)
Echocardiography Guided Prognosis Following Myocardial Infarction: Redefining Risk Stratification to Improve Patient Outcomes (ECHO Guide Study)
Sandhir will use his Fellowship to increase the research capacity, participation and output of the quaternary echocardiography laboratory at the RBWH. The primary goal is to exploit the large reservoir of high quality echocardiography data stored on the current institutional database (currently >117 000 studies), to create a number of disease specific databases incorporating clinical, echocardiographic and outcomes data, which can provide novel insights into disease pathophysiology, redefine thresholds for normalcy, enable quality improvement and redefine risk stratification.
Dr Teresa Brown (Nutrition and Dietetics, RBWH)
Optimising nutrition outcomes and care pathways for patients undergoing surgical resection for head and neck cancer
Teresa will leverage her clinical-research expertise and skills in collaboration with the multidisciplinary team at one of the largest head and neck cancer (HNC) Centres in Australia to develop evidence-based nutrition management guidelines for the peri-operative management of patients with HNC undergoing surgical resection, and ultimately become international leaders and a research centre of excellence for the nutrition management of patients with HNC.
Dr Mahesh Ramanan, (ICU, Caboolture Hospital & Adult Intensive Care Services, TPCH)
Transforming clinical trials in Queensland
Mahesh’s vision is to transform the way clinical trials are conducted in Queensland ICUs by enhancing RCT capacity in regional centres in partnership with larger centres and developing a new platform of registry-based trials that will serve to answer clinically important questions in a cost-effective, practical, and value-based manner.
Dr Andrea Henden, (Cancer Care Services, RBWH)
Addressing unmet need in Bone Marrow Transplantation
Andrea’s research aims to understand the immunological mechanisms leading to Bone Marrow Transplantation (BMT) complications, and to offer new treatments for Metro North patients with unmet medical need. This will be achieved through a program of strategically targeted translational clinical research carried out at the RBWH and QIMRB.
Dr Jonathon Fanning, (Internal Medicine and Aged Care, RBWH)
Reducing cardiovascular and neurological injury with personalised perioperative care
Jonathon will use his Fellowship to develop a sustainable program of specialist practice and innovative research that will advance perioperative medicine to ensure patients return home safely following surgery. The health impact from his research program is expected to improve the patient experience, advance clinical practice, and contribute to optimising institutional operations.
Research is critical to advancing healthcare. A key goal in the Metro North Research Strategy is to find ways to support research and researchers to continue their work to find new ways to treat, diagnose and prevent serious health conditions.
The Fellowship program awards up to five part-time grants, specifically designed to allow our most promising clinicians to develop and advance a body of research aligned to the Research Strategy to create a strong foundation of evidence-based healthcare through research.
Since 2019, fifteen Fellowships have been awarded across a wide range of fields and addressing a wide array of topics. To read more about our current Fellows, please go to the Metro North Research website. Once again, congratulations to our five recipients for 2022. I’m looking forward to seeing the progress of these diverse research projects.
Regards,
Dan
