Post-acute trauma recovery in the spotlight at Jamieson Trauma Institute annual showcase

The JTI showcase boasted expert speakers on trauma topics affecting Queenslanders.
Jamieson Trauma Institute experts have unpacked the best of their work in mental health, rehabilitation, data innovations and infection management at this month’s annual showcase.
From systems and insights from trauma experts through to lived experiences from consumers, the annual event demonstrated how important post-acute trauma recovery is and how this is often where the most complex challenges begin.
Chair of Trauma Surveillance and Data Analytics Professor Kirsten Vallmuur spoke about the true burden of trauma with a cost in focus topic, while JTI Chair of Trauma-related Mental Health Dr Dylan Flaws discussed psychosocial recovery after injury.
JTI Biostatistician Jacelle Warren spoke about the role of surveillance and data analytics in revealing the true scale and cost of trauma to the health system.
“InjurIQ, JTI’s new cloud-based injury data platform, brings together important data so we can more fully understand the healthcare journey for all injured Queenslanders,” she said.
“Data from InjurIQ tells us that Queensland hospitals have close to 40 times more injury hospitalisations, and 105 times more injury-related emergency department visits (public hospitals), for every major trauma patient we see.
“InjurIQ also shows us that around $1 billion dollars in public hospital costs, and $400 million dollars in public Emergency Department costs, are spent on treating injuries per year.
“The data in InjurIQ exposes the burden and cost of injury to the hospital sector, however, we acknowledge this is only the tip of the iceberg. Ongoing care and support for patients in the community is also vast, as is the cost to patients, families, friends and society in general.”
Jamieson Trauma Institute analyses data to better understand the causes, trends, patterns, burden, costs and outcomes of injury in Queensland.
