About Bret Malinas

Art brings me joy, identity and pride. I enjoy sharing my creativity with others and using art to express myself, explore ideas and connect with the world around me.

I enjoy painting boats, seascapes and landscapes. My work is influenced by Impressionism, using layered paint and pencil, broken colour, dots and dashes to capture light, movement and atmosphere.

My still-life series introduced me to collage, where I cut out leaves and flowers and layered them over watercolour paintings. Drawing to music inspired me, building my confidence to experiment, work beyond my comfort zone and embrace a “just do it” attitude.

My interest in art began during a hospital stay in 2021, when I started colouring in. Friends and family gave me pencils and colouring books, encouraging my creativity. In 2023, I joined an art class, which deepened my interest in painting and gave me confidence to explore new artistic horizons.
