Conditions
Please note this is not an exhaustive list of all conditions for outpatient services and does not exclude consideration for referral unless specifically stipulated in the out of scope section.
Note: Skin lesions requiring excision can also be referred within the Metro North Hospital and Health Service area to General Surgical at the Caboolture Hospital, The Prince Charles Hospital and Redcliffe Hospital if these locations are closer to home.
Paediatric services
Referrals for children and young people should follow the Children’s Health Queensland referral guidelines.
Emergency department referrals
All urgent cases must be discussed with the on call Dermatology Registrar to obtain appropriate prioritisation and treatment. Contact through:

Urgent cases accepted via phone must be accompanied with a written referral and a copy faxed immediately to the Central Patient Intake Unit: 1300 364 952.
Please note: Surgical, Treatment and Rehabilitation Service (STARS) does not have an Emergency Department.
If any of the following are present or suspected, phone 000 to arrange immediate transfer to the emergency department or seek emergent medical advice if in a remote region.
Immediate
- Severe blistering, purpuric or pustular drug eruptions, toxic epidermal necrolysis, Sweet’s Disease, cellulitis, severe bullous eruptions
- Stevens Johnson syndrome, erythema multiforme
- Erythroderma, pustular psoriasis, acne fulminans
- Eczema herpeticum, infections with immunosuppression
Urgent
- All other drug eruptions
- Atypical pigmented lesions
- Suspected melanoma
- Acute contact dermatitis
- Keratoacanthoma
An inpatient bed may not be possible or relevant once the patient has been assessed by the Dermatology Medical Officer on call. Therefore please ensure that if your patient comes from outside of the metropolitan area that your referral includes travel, accommodation and escort arrangements.
Out of scope services
The following conditions are not seen by Dermatology at the Surgical Treatment and Rehabilitation Service (STARS) and should be referred elsewhere. These include:
- Sexually transmitted diseases
- Medicare ineligible patients
- Aesthetic consultation/surgery
