Metro North Health staff among those recognised in Australia Day 2024 honours
The Governor-General last week announced Honours and awards for 1,042 Australians, with some of Metro North Health’s own health heroes receiving prestigious honours for their exceptional service and unwavering dedication.
Among those recognised were Associate Professor David Cartwright, Associate Professor Zarnie Lwin, Associate Professor David Thomson and Mr Adrian Carson.
Senior Staff Specialist Medical Oncologist Associate Professor Zarnie Lwin received a Medal of the Order of Australia (OAM) for service to medicine in the field of neuro-oncology at the Royal Brisbane and Women’s Hospital and The Prince Charles Hospital.
“It is incredibly humbling. It is a testament to everyone who supported me in all the various roles over the last 15 years,” Dr Lwin said.
“I am so honoured and grateful for all the opportunities to serve that have come my way, and for the inspiration my patients and carers have given me through the years.”
Former Director of Neonatology at Royal Brisbane and Women’s Hospital and current Staff Specialist, Associate Professor David Cartwright received a well-deserved Public Service Medal for his outstanding contribution to neonatal medicine.
Associate Professor David Thomson received a Member of the Order of Australia (AM) for significant service to dentistry, particularly in the field of prosthodontics.
“As I have a conjoint position with Metro North Health and UQ, I am honoured to be recognised for my contribution to the dental profession and dental education over many years, more recently in the coordination of the DClinDent Prosthodontic program at UQ,” Dr Thomson said.
“Since the UQ Dental School relocated to the Oral Health Centre in 2015 and formed the Oral Health Alliance with Metro North Health in 2017, seven students have graduated and nine are currently in the program.”
Mr Adrian Carson, CEO of the Institute for Urban Indigenous Health and Metro North Health Board Member, was awarded a Member of the Order of Australia (AM) for his significant service to First Nations health through research and development programs.
