Our work towards Health Equity

Health equity

Metro North Hospital and Health Service is committed to providing equity of access to high quality health care services and building relationships based on inclusion with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people and their communities and remains committed to achieve life expectancy parity for Aboriginal peoples and Torres Strait Islander peoples by 2031.

Metro North Health’s objective is to build and support empowered communities to achieve equity of health outcomes, access, and experience for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples based on the social, cultural and economic determinants of health.

The Metro North Health Equity Strategy, launched in July 2025, describes our commitment to drive health equity and eliminate institutional racism across the public health system.

Metro North Health Equity Strategy 2025–2028

The Metro North Health Equity Strategy 2025-2028 describes our commitment to drive health equity, eliminate institutional racism across the public health system and achieve life expectancy parity for Aboriginal peoples and Torres Strait Islander peoples by 2031.

The Metro North Health Equity Strategy 2025–2028 is structured around key strategic actions rather than separate Key Performance Areas (KPAs). This reflects a shift in focus from siloed priorities to integrated actions.

While Key Priority Areas 1 to 5 (can be viewed below under Our Priorities) remain important, they are now embedded across all strategic priorities, ensuring a coordinated and holistic approach to achieving health equity for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples. This alignment strengthens accountability and promotes system-wide impact across every action delivered.

Metro North Health Equity Strategic Priorities:

  1. There is zero experience of racism within Metro North Health.
  2. Creating safe hospital and healthcare services for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people.
  3. Develop and enhance culturally safe, co-designed innovative care models.
  4. Sustain culturally safe, data driven equity.

Metro North Health Equity Implementation and Evaluation Plan 2022–2025

The Metro North Health Equity Implementation and Evaluation Plan 2022–2025 was developed in partnership with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Elders, community stakeholders, our Executive team within Metro North and external partner organisations.

The actions outlined in the Implementation and Evaluation Plan are designed to demonstrate a commitment to the health equity reform agenda and improve health outcomes of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples across the whole health care system.

The Implementation and Evaluation Plan provides a priority for the delivery of strategies and actions in Our Journey Towards Health Equity, Metro North Health Equity Strategy 2022-2025 and assigns accountability to the areas responsible for each action at Metro North Health and ongoing monitoring / reporting responsibilities.

In addition to the plan, the supporting ‘Appendix 2’ outlines the measures, tools, baseline and targets. This document will be reviewed and updated on a quarterly basis by the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Leadership Team.
