Brisbane Airway Management Course

Date: Saturday 24 March 2018
Venue: Centre for Excellence and Innovation in Anaesthesia (CEIA)
Cost: $400 (includes catering and coffee)

The Department of Anaesthesia, RBWH invites you to attend the inaugural Brisbane Airway Management Course at the Centre for Excellence and Innovation in Anaesthesia (CEIA).

This one day course pulls together unique and contemporary sessions on airway assessment and management, targeted for consultant anaesthetists. The course emphasis is on the practical and challenging aspects of dealing with the difficult airway, which are not readily available elsewhere.

  • Workshop attendees will have the opportunity to perform nasendoscopies on each other and learn about the place of this simple bedside investigation in preoperative airway planning.
  • A simulation-based tracheostomy trouble-shooting session will help anaesthetists work through uncomfortable clinical scenarios involving “when the tracheostomy goes bad”.
  • Complex airway cases linking clinical presentation with preoperative imaging and surgical requirements will be discussed in a panel setting. Interaction with participants will be encouraged and the focus of this session will be on decision making.
  • The final session will involve immersive simulation of difficult airway cases. These cases are based upon difficult clinical situations that have been encountered by members of the faculty.
  • Throughout the day bench top stations will be available on awake fibreoptic equipment and skills, setting up Optiflow high flow nasal prongs, and a display of various tracheostomy types in common use.

Participants

This workshop is designed for consultant anaesthetists only and numbers for the day are capped at 12.

ANZCA Continuing Professional Development Points

This course is approved for ANZCA CPD points:

  • 2 points for the case discussion component (Practice Evaluation – Case Conference)
  • 10 points for the remainder of the workshop (Knowledge and Skills – Learning Sessions)

A certificate will be issued on the day.

Faculty

Simulation components of the day will be lead by the doyen of simulation in anaesthesia in Australia, Associate Professor Kersi Taraporewalla.

We are incredibly lucky to have Kersi’s expertise and guidance for this workshop. Other course faculty all have extensive experience in simulation, difficult airway management and teaching.
