Year 7 oral health screening day
Smarter Smiles is a free program designed to engage high school students, provide oral health education and create a dental home with their local school public dental clinic. Year 7 students will be involved in a classroom oral health lesson and be given the opportunity to have an on-site dental screening (a brief check-up) and fluoride application. As part of the Smarter Smiles program, the website was designed for high school students and parents to enable access to free public dental services and oral health education.
There are no costs involved. Simple paperwork may need to be completed for consent and for Medicare reporting purposes.
All year 7 students high school students whose school has opted to participate in the Smarter Smiles program.
A consent form is required for the year 7 oral health screening and fluoride varnish day. Download the form for the screening day or collect from the school office when available.
Parents are not required to attend school-based activities and oral health screenings.
Your child’s dental care will be provided by registered oral health therapists and dental therapists and supported by dental assistants.
All Queensland Health staff are experienced in working with children. Every effort will be made to ensure that children participating in the Smarter Smiles program feel safe and confident. Onsite screenings are usually well received by anxious students, as they are supported by their peers and feel more comfortable in the familiar classroom environment. If your child becomes upset, unwell or is otherwise unable to complete their care, they will be able to return to class and a staff member will contact you to make alternative arrangements.
If your child requires emergency dental treatment contact the Oral Health Call Centre on 1300 300 850. If your child is experiencing facial swelling, please seek emergency care at a hospital.
