2019 Herston Biofabrication Institute conference

375 attendees. 30 presenters. 12 Hospital of the Future fashion outfits. 4 Medical Device Design Challenge teams. What an amazing day it has been!

For its inaugural event opened by Queensland Minister for State Development, Manufacturing, Infrastructure and Planning The Hon Cameron Dick MP, the Herston Biofabrication Institute conference hosted over 375 researchers, clinicians, students, government representatives and industry partners at the Royal Brisbane and Women’s Hospital Education Centre for a day of biofabrication for building real world clinical impact.

More than 30 presenters from QUT, Metro North Hospital and Health and beyond contributed to scientific sessions on orthopaedics, burns, vascular surgery, urology and cancer care services, and to special sessions on virtual and augmented reality and 3D modelling.

The conference also featured a Hospital of the Future Fashion Collection, led by the QUT Faculty of Creative Industries and modelled by QUT, Royal Brisbane and Women’s Hospital and Redcliffe Hospital staff and students. Student Kate Sutherland took home the QUT Design Lab sponsored prize, selected by  QUT DVC for Learning and Teaching Professor Suzi Derbyshire and Executive Dean of QUT Faculty of Creative Industries Professor Mandy Thomas.

The Medical Device Design Innovation Challenge, sponsored by Cook Medical and supported by Konica Minolta, featured 4 teams of QUT engineering students who addressed real life design challenges proposed by Metro North Hospital and Health Services clinicians. Teams pitched their solutions to challenges in the space of burns, orthopaedics, nursing and vascular surgery to the audience and to judges Professor Mandy Thomas, QUT Executive Dean of Creative Industries, Dr Keith McLean, CSIRO Director of Manufacturing, Ms Ann Damien, Cook Medical New Technology Associate, and Mr Graham Fryer, QUT Vice President of Resources and Chief Financial Officer. Students Renee Nightingale, Coedi Martin, Erin Chapman, Haveena Anbananthan and Emma Richardson took home the prize with their design to treat intracranial aneurysms, a challenge proposed by RBWH Neurointerventional radiologist Dr John Clouston.

The conference also featured 25 posters, and QUT IHBI Dr Edward Ren took home the poster prize sponsored by Konica Minolta.
