Graham brings empathy and understanding to his role at STARS

Senior Security Officer, Supervisor Graham keeps staff, patients and visitors at STARS safe

Many of Metro North’s security officers have worked in different fields before entering the security profession. This includes STARS Senior Security Officer, Supervisor, Graham Bushell who used to be in the Navy.

“I worked as an electronics engineer in the Navy for 25 years which included serving in the Middle East and the Falklands War,” Graham said.

Graham has worked in hospital security for the past 15 years, becoming STARS first security officer to take up the role as supervisor.

“I started my first and only security job at the RBWH in 2009, not aware at that time of how it would challenge me. In 2020 I transferred to STARS at the start of this enterprise,” he said.

“My role includes supervising the shift, assisting with rostering and the identification and management of security threats and risks to both staff, patients and visitors.

“I take a lot of satisfaction in resolving concerns of staff and patients, using skills I’ve acquired over many years.

“I strive to make our patients stay as pleasant as possible.”

The security officers at STARS perform a range of diverse duties including access cards to staff, traffic management for the hospital entrance, providing access to contractors for critical maintenance and regular patrols inside and outside the facility.

They are also the first responders in emergency situations to ensure everyone in the building remains safe.

“There’s never a day that is the same when you work in security,” explains Graham.

“I have had a few nerve-racking moments including a person trapped in a lift after-hours who was on oxygen-support.

“I had to liaise with an external engineer company to reset the lift’s brake so we could gain access quickly.”

For Graham one of the other rewarding aspects of the role is the work environment at STARS.

“I enjoy the camaraderie of my work mates and staff, and value loyalty honesty and enthusiasm.”

“We always work in pairs – it is good to know that your work mate has your back.

“A lot of what we do is de-escalating situations or behaviours.

“No one comes to a hospital, whether it be a patient or family member without some level of stress or anxiety. Responding to a situation with empathy and understanding can make all the difference.”

Outside of work Graham is a proud father/father-in law and a grandpa to two great little girls. He enjoys trekking, cycling, drone flying and abseiling.
“I really enjoy drone flying. Due to my background in electronics, I love technology and can appreciate the know-how of what goes into a drone. One day I would love to get into drone racing.”
