“Find something you can be genuinely passionate about,” is the advice Michelle Donovan would give to anyone starting out in Health.

“What makes coming to work easy. I’ve been lucky enough to love my job for 20 years.”

RBWH occupational therapists Michelle, Tennille Rowland and Cherie Aceto were all recently honoured with 20-year Length of Service awards, and all spoke of feeling “privileged” to work in a challenging but stimulating environment.

All three agreed that a key factor in their longevity was the support and guidance they received when they first came into the job.

“You need to allow yourself to be a fledgling,” said Cherie.

“Try things, learn things, don’t put too much pressure on yourself when you’re young.”

Tennille said with 60 years’ experience between them, they made a point to ensure the Occupational Therapy Department was a nurturing place for younger staff coming in.

It also means an exceptional quality of care for patients, Occupational Therapist Director Sue Laracy said.

“Tennille, Cherie and Michelle have provided 20 years of dedicated service as advanced specialists in occupational therapy in the areas of acute stroke management, hand therapy and plastics (respectively). They are highly regarded by their colleagues and a valued asset of our team,” said Sue.

“They reflect the values of Metro North every day in their daily practice and are great team players.”

The three 20-year veterans give much credit to Sue herself for the sense of camaraderie in the OT team.

“This isn’t just our milestone, it’s Sue’s as well. She’s been here right from the start,” said Tennille.
