The Prince Charles Hospital (TPCH) has been officially certified as a Primary Stroke Centre by the Australian Stroke Coalition, marking a significant achievement in delivering high-quality stroke care.

TPCH cares for about 300-400 stroke patients per year, including emergency department presentations and inpatient stroke numbers.

Stroke Unit certification is recommended by both the World Health Organisation and the Federal Government Heart and Stroke Plan as a quality assurance and improvement method.

It is aimed at ensuring hospitals deliver consistent, high-quality, evidence-based stroke care. The program is voluntary and open to all acute stroke hospitals in Australia.

TPCH’s Rehabilitation and Acute Stroke (RAS) unit is a 29-bed ward with 23 rehabilitation beds and six dedicated stroke unit beds.

Internal Medicine Nursing Director Kevin Clark said TPCH was the first hospital in Metro North to achieve the certification, which is initially valid for 12 months.

“The certification certainly reflects TPCH’s commitment to evidence-based practice and multi-disciplinary collaboration,” Kevin said.

“TPCH pursued certification to reinforce our commitment to providing the highest standard of acute and rehabilitation stroke care for patients.

“It is also helping TPCH to drive stronger quality improvement momentum and identify areas for service growth and development.”
