    Visiting hours and wards

We understand the importance of support from loved ones while patients are in hospital and strongly encourage family and friends to visit our patients during their stay. Children accompanied by an adult are also most welcome. Visiting hours are flexible and we encourage you to ask the ward staff about the best times to visit your relative or friend.

While you are visiting the ward, please be mindful of other patients nearby who are recovering from illness or injury. Please be aware that treating teams may be required to interrupt your visit to provide healthcare to the patient. The Nurse Unit Manager is responsible for the ward and may be required to restrict visitors during certain medical and nursing procedures or in an emergency situation. We kindly ask that visitors do not attend the hospital if they have a potentially infectious illness (e.g. coughs or colds, gastro symptoms).

Please note that access to the hospital is restricted between 9.00pm and 5.30am. If you require access outside of these hours, security can be contacted via the intercom that is based at the RBWH Main Entrance, Butterfield Street.

To contact a ward, phone our friendly Switchboard team on (07) 3646 8111 and ask to be put through to the relevant ward.

    Bringing food for patients

We understand some patients prefer their own food. Please note we do not take responsibility for food that is brought in by visitors for patients. We advise visitors who wish to bring food for patients to choose low risk food and check with staff before giving to their relative.

    Bringing flowers to patients

Flowers and potted plants are a lovely gift for patients. For patient safety reasons, we cannot allow flowers or potted plants in these areas:

    • Intensive Care (4A)
    • Burns (4C)
    • Haematology (5C)
    • Infectious Diseases Wattlebrae (6C)
    • Neurosurgery (8AS). Some patients are allowed, please check with the ward first.

    Your appointment (outpatients)

Your outpatient appointment is to see a specialist or clinician about your condition without being admitted into hospital. You may have an outpatient appointment before and/or after your admission to hospital.

    Hand hygiene

Clean hands help prevent infection. To reduce the risk and spread of infections, we ask you, your visitors and staff to keep their hands clean.

It is okay to use the hand gel or the basins to clean hands. Please ask your family and friends not to visit if they are sick. Find out how you can protect yourself and your loved ones by hand washing for hygiene.
