Communication about your baby

Ward rounds take place in ICN at 8am and 4pm every day, and at 8am in SCN every day.

• During ward rounds, the medical and nursing team will review each baby and plan for the day. You are welcome to be present for the ward round but ask that you leave the room when the team discusses the other babies.
• Each room in the nursery has a direct phone number. Please ask your nurse for the number to your room. We look forward to updating you about your baby whenever you call.
• If we need to call you, it will show as a “private number” or “no caller ID”. While we understand that spam phone calls are a real problem, we do encourage you to answer your phone while your baby is with us, as this is how we will communicate with you if you are not here.
• If you would like to speak to a doctor about how your baby is progressing, please ask the bedside nurse and we will arrange that for you.
• Nursing handovers takes place at various times but mostly between 630am – 7am, 2pm -230pm, 630pm – 7pm and 1030pm – 11pm. We will ask you to pop out of the room while the handover takes place so that we can maintain the confidentiality of all the babies in our care.

What do I do if I am worried about my baby?

If you are worried about your baby, please talk to the nurse allocated to look after you.  They can contact the medical staff and arrange for them to speak with you or review your baby.  If you are still concerned, you can ask to speak to the team leader for the shift.  During business hours, the Clinical Nurse Consultants are also available to speak with you.  Additionally, there is a process called “Ryan’s Rule”.
