Measles Alert for locations in Brisbane

MEDIA STATEMENT

Metro North Public Health Unit has issued a Measles Alert following a confirmed case of the highly infectious disease at separate locations in Brisbane.

The case was unknowingly infectious in Brisbane between Monday 7 April 2025 and Wednesday 9 April visiting several businesses and locations.

Those locations and times include:

  • Brisbane International Airport (arrived on China Southern airlines flight CZ381) – 7:55am – 9:25am on Monday 7 April 2025
  • Mantra on Mary, 70 Mary Street, City from 9:00am on Monday 7 April until 12:00 midday on Wednesday 9 April 2025
  • Woolworths MacArthur building, 229 Queen Street, City, 2:00pm – 3:00pm on Tuesday 8 April 2025
  • Emergency Department, Mater Hospital Brisbane, 12:00pm – 12:45pm on Wednesday, 9 April 2025

These locations do not pose an ongoing risk to people.

Metro North Public Health physician Dr David Harley said anyone who was at these locations during these times should monitor themselves for symptoms for 18 days from when they may have had contact.

“If they do develop symptoms, they should seek medical advice,” Dr Harley said.

“Early symptoms of measles include a fever, tiredness, cough, runny nose, and red, inflamed eyes. Those symptoms then progress to a blotchy red rash, which often starts on the face before becoming widespread.

“Measles symptoms typically start between seven and 18 days after infection.

“Anyone seeking treatment for an illness they think could be measles should call ahead before visiting their GP or medical practice to allow precautions to be taken that can prevent the illness spreading to others,” Dr Harley said.

Queensland Health recommends that anyone born in 1966 or after, who has not had two documented doses of measles, mumps, rubella (MMR) vaccine or had proven measles, should visit their doctor to get vaccinated for measles. The MMR vaccine is safe and effective, and is given free for children at 12 and 18 months of age as part of the National Immunisation Program.

Further information on measles is available on the Queensland Health website.
