Hi team!

Uncertainty prevails yet again!

I often wonder what we will be telling future generations about this time in the history of the world? From the conversations I have had with so many over the last few days, it will be commenting on how we were expected to deal with this ongoing uncertainty and relentless ambiguity. How well or not so well we coped at the time?

One change has such a significant impact on so many other unseen things in our daily life let alone on what we are constantly adjusting and responding to at work and particularly in a health service of our size. Most people tell me they will “get it done” at work but the anxiety sits with so many unknowns in daily personal and family life.

We know of course that nothing is permanent and this too shall pass. What’s different of course about 2020 and 2021 is the uncertainty and ongoing ambiguity about when will this actually pass so things can get back to some resemblance of normal!

As we get set for another Easter whether you are working at Metro North or lucky enough to enjoy a few days off, please can I encourage you to ask someone if they’re okay? Check in with a colleague and or a friend or family member and see how they are going! One of the best things to happen culturally in Australia and other parts of the world over the last 12 months is that it is now OK to admit that you’re NOT OK and to seek support.

If you are personally not coping with this ongoing ambiguity then may I encourage you to ask for help. There are significant resources online and if you get a moment you may want to explore our own QHEPS page which provides some great resources under the COVID – Four Domains of Wellbeing. Our Employee Assistance Program can also be contacted on 1300 360 364. Our Staff Psychology Service may also be able to help by calling 3647 9673. The research still says that talking to a trusted friend / family member or colleague can be the best way to help you open up the conversation on dealing with this ongoing uncertainty. Their support may also help you find the courage to seek the help of an expert if you think that’s a great next step!

Thanks for everything you are doing to provide the best possible care for our community. Please be sure to be looking after you too!

Warm regards,

Bruce
