Under the Queensland Government’s Hospital Rescue Plan, The Prince Charles Hospital (TPCH) will be expanding. This exciting project includes at least 93 additional beds and a new, fully developed plan that meets Hospital and Health Service and clinical need.

The expansion will deliver better services for the people of Brisbane, making sure they can receive healthcare faster and closer to home.

TPCH Expansion will deliver significant improvements to the hospital campus and will support our healthcare service to meet the growing needs of the local community.

What we’re building

TPCH Expansion includes the following:

• At least 93 new overnight beds
• A new, fully developed plan that meets Hospital and Health Service and clinical needs

Timeline

Queensland Health, in partnership with Metro North Health, is delivering TPCH Expansion.

The following works have already been completed:

January 2025 – Building 50 (home to Allied Health, Nursing and Medical administration functions) completed

May 2025 – New Gathering Garden completed

Queensland Health is currently capturing its clinical priorities and developing a staging plan to deliver this vital infrastructure following the release of the Queensland Government’s Hospital Rescue Plan in April 2025.

An updated project timeline will be provided once the plan is finalised.

Why we’re expanding

Based on 2023 data, TPCH is the largest hospital catchment in Metro North with the second busiest Emergency Department in Queensland.  The TPCH catchment also has the largest child population and is projected to grow (0.97% per annum) over the next 20 years.

Expanding TPCH will make sure we meet the needs of our community, now and in the future.
