How a simple guitar is music to the ears of STARS rehabilitation patients
The Brain Injury Rehabilitation Unit (BIRU) at STARS recently received new patient resources, including an acoustic guitar, an Xbox and a foosball table thanks to a generous donation from the Cory Charitable Foundation.
Nurse Unit Manager Deborah Kerr shared how these items aid patients, both in and out of therapy.
“These resources not only support therapy by contributing to hand-eye coordination, but also bring joy and a sense of normalcy to our patients,” she said.
“The guitar, in particular, has been a real favourite with multiple groups using it.
“As well as being used by individual patients, one of our security staff played the guitar for a group of patients and family members have played it for their loved ones when they’ve visited the ward.
“The beauty of an acoustic guitar is that a lot of people can play it to some degree so it’s very accessible. Playing or listening to a familiar song provides a beautiful way for patients, their families and staff to share a connection.”
Patient Robert, who has been relearning his guitar skills following a stroke, initially struggled with fine motor coordination and strength. However, he shared that the guitar has been a beacon of hope for him during his stay at STARS.
“This guitar has been the best thing that has happened since I’ve been here,” he said.
Patient Stuart has been enjoying the foosball table, becoming quite skilled at beating the staff!
