Kidney Supportive Care Masterclass 2024
Commencing in 2024, the Metro North Hospital and Health Service is hosting the Inaugural Australian Kidney Supportive Care Masterclass that will occur yearly, rotating between Brisbane, Melbourne, and Sydney. The program will cover core curriculum of Kidney Supportive Care and is aimed at any interdisciplinary health professional or academic who has an interest or is working with those living with advanced kidney disease.
The 2024 program is featuring local, National, and international expert speakers on topics related to the provision of Kidney Supportive Care including:
- Fundamentals of Kidney Supportive Care
- Conservative (non-dialysis) Management
- Shared Decision Making
- Moral Distress in Nephrology clinicians
- Serious Illness communication Frameworks
- Complex Symptom Management and much more!

Dr Sam Gelfand from Boston
Dr Josh Lakin from Boston
Dr Sam Gelfand
Sam Gelfand is a nephrologist and palliative care specialist on the KidneyPal Team at Dana-Farber Cancer Institute / Brigham and Women’s Hospital in Boston, Massachusetts. She is also the Associate Program Director of the Harvard Interprofessional Palliative Care Fellowship.
Dr Josh Lakin
Dr. Lakin works as an attending physician on the inpatient palliative care consult service and intensive palliative care unit at the Dana-Farber Cancer Institute and the Brigham and Women’s Hospital in Boston, Massachusetts and serves as the director for the KidneyPal palliative care service as well as teaching at the Harvard Medical School Center for Palliative Care. In terms of research pursuits, Dr. Lakin is interested in working to build scalable and measurable models for delivering palliative care, especially high-quality serious illness communication.
Meet the Australian KSC Masterclass Organising Committee
Nephrology and Palliative Care Medical and Nursing Clinicians across Australia have joined together to create the Inaugural Australian Kidney Supportive Care Masterclass.
Dr Frank Brennan
Frank Brennan is a Palliative Care Physician employed within the Department of Nephrology at St George Hospital in Sydney in a Renal Supportive Care Service. He participated in a KDIGO Controversies Conference on Renal Supportive Care and was a co-author of their recommendations. He is the current convenor of a Renal Supportive Care Interest Group comprising Nephrologists and Palliative Care Physicians.
Dr Kirsten Hepburn
Dr Kirsten Hepburn is a Nephrologist with a Clinical Diploma of Palliative Medicine and a special interest in Kidney Supportive Care. She is employed as a General Nephrologist and Kidney Supportive Care Nephrologist at the Royal Brisbane and Women’s Hospital / Metro North Hospital and Health Service. She is currently the acting co-chair of the ANZSPM and ANZSN Kidney Supportive Care Special Interest Group. She has been involved in delivering Kidney Supportive Care education sessions around Australia
Dr Kelly Li
Dr Kelly Li is a dual trained nephrologist and palliative care physician, working in the Kidney Supportive Care service at St George Hospital in Sydney. She has a special interest in bioethics, advance care planning, and communication within the healthcare setting.
Keynote speaker – Dr Kathryn Ducharlet
Dr Kathryn Ducharlet is a renal physician and completed her medical degree with honors at the University of Melbourne and has completed a PhD in Kidney Supportive Care also at Melbourne University. She was awarded the Rowden White Prize in 2017 for academic excellence. She is the co-chair of the Kidney Supportive Care special interest group which aims to improve quality of life for all people with advanced kidney disease in Australia and New Zealand
Laura Austin Laura is a registered Nurse who has worked across a variety of areas in nephrology for over 18 years, specialising in Kidney Supportive Care for the past 8. Completing her Nursing Master’s Degree in 2015 and currently completing a postgraduate certificate in Palliative care.
