Bribie Island Satellite Health Centre Cancer Care Service
Cancer Care Services at the Bribie Island Satellite Health Centre is staffed by on- site specialist Cancer Care Nurses and Pharmacists. Outpatient services such as chemotherapy, blood product support and therapy treatments for patients requiring low risk therapy are provided. As the Bribie Island Cancer Service provides low risk therapies you will receive your initial consultation and therapy at another Metro North Cancer Care Service. Your treating Cancer Care Doctor will determine if you are suitable for treatment at Bribie Island Cancer Service.
Our services
We have six treatment chairs/beds, one consultation room, and one multipurpose room to provide:
- Administration of chemotherapy and other anti- cancer therapies
- blood product support
- supportive therapies
- Management of central venous access devices
- Specialised education, information
- Care coordination of cancer diagnosis, treatment for side effects and symptom management
- Allied Health Support
- Medical Consultations via Tele- health

How to access this service
You will need a referral letter from your GP or medical practitioner to access this service. Your doctor will need to send your referral letter to the service through the Central Patient Intake service. If you are currently a patient receiving care at one of the Royal Brisbane and Women’s Hospital Cancer Care Service Sites, and live close by to Bribie Island you can discuss if you are able to be treated at Bribie Island Satellite Health Centre with your treating doctor. You will receive a confirmation letter advising you of your outpatient appointment and what to do next.
What to bring
- Your Medicare card.
- Health Care Card and/or concession card (if you have one).
- Adverse drug alert card (if you have one).
- List of Medications you are currently taking, including any that you have bought without a prescription and herbal medicine.
- Relevant x-rays, scans, ultrasounds or any other test results or reports.
- Private health insurance card (if you want to use it).
- Glasses, hearing aid, walking frame.
- Your appointment letter.
- Any special items listed on your letter.
- Your appointment book.
- Workcover claim number (if relevant).
- Refreshments and something to drink while you wait.
- A responsible adult carer to stay with you to hear instructions, help you and take you home.
- Advanced Healthcare Directive if you have one.
What to expect
Blood tests
A blood test may be required before your appointment with your Cancer Care doctor or scheduled treatment. You should have your blood collected on a day prior to your medical appointment (e.g.: Wednesday or Thursday if your appointment is Friday). If it is not possible to have your blood test prior to your medical review or treatment, please discuss this with your Cancer Care doctor and nursing team.
Public pathology services may be available in a limited capacity on Bribie Island Cancer Care Services. Your Cancer Care doctor and nursing team will notify you if you are eligible for this. Public collection centres are available at:

- Caboolture Hospital
- Redcliff e Hospital
- Nambour Hospital
- Sunshine Coast University Hospital

Private pathology services are available within the Bribie Island and Caboolture area; however you will need to check with your doctor regarding the best option for you.
You will see nursing staff , and you may see a Pharmacist and Cancer Care Coordinators. You will have a separate Tele-health appointment with your doctor for clinic consultations and Allied Health Services if required. Your care delivery team will be happy to answer any questions you may have.
Registration
There is direct entry to the Cancer Care Service via the main carpark. There is also a drop off zone located outside the Cancer Care Service entrance for your convenience. Press the intercom when you arrive at the Cancer Care Service glass doors and our friendly staff will greet you. Upon arrival into the Cancer Care
Service our reception staff will register you. Please let us know if you have any special requirements for your visit with us.
Appointment times
Appointment times are a guide to when you will be seen and receive treatment. We may need to attend to patients who require urgent attention, which can cause unexpected delays.
You should notify staff if you have been waiting more than one hour to be seen or receive treatment.
Feeling unwell?
If you feel unwell while you are here please let the staff know immediately. In an emergency, nursing and medical staff are available to provide treatment.
Please do not come to Bribie Island Satellite Hospital if you require urgent medical attention. Go to your nearest hospital or health care provider immediately. In an emergency, call Triple Zero (000).
Mobile Phones
Mobile phones are not permitted in the vicinity of medical equipment. Please switch off your mobile phone during your visit.
Meals
Light refreshments are provided for patients receiving treatment. There are also vending machines located in the main foyer of the Bribie Island Satellite Hospital.
You are welcome to bring your own food and drinks with you.
Pharmacy
Your doctor may prescribe medications for you to take at home.
Some chemotherapy-related medications are available from the pharmacy located inside Cancer Care Services. Other medications may need to be dispensed from a community pharmacy.
Check with your doctor or nurse if this applies to your prescription.
Your next appointment
The doctor may need to see you before each treatment. This will depend on your treatment regime and your individual requirements.
The doctor will discuss with you your plan of care and when you need to have another blood test.
