Tobacco Control

Our Environmental Health Officers (EHOs) play an important role in minimising the exposure to tobacco and other smoking products in areas where we live and work in order to improve health outcomes. They monitor and enforce compliance with the Tobacco and Other Smoking Products Act 1998 and Medicines and Poisons Act 2019.

Key Activities:

  • Investigate complaints relating to the sale of cigarettes (including vapes) to minors
  • Investigate complaints relating to breaches of sale, advertising, display and promotion of tobacco and other smoking products at retail outlets
  • Investigate complaints relating to the sale of vapes containing nicotine
  • Monitor and enforce compliance of smoking in certain places where smoking is not permitted
  • Routine compliance inspections of eating and drinking venues in relation to smoking laws
  • Provide information and assistance to tobacco retailers, other relevant industries and members of the public regarding tobacco and other smoking products laws
