Public Health Unit
The Metro North Public Health Unit is located in Windsor, Brisbane from which we provide a public health service across the geographic area of Metro North
The role of our Public Health unit is to enhance the health of our population. Our Communicable Disease, Environmental Health and Health Surveillance teams work together to prevent, manage, and control communicable disease and environmental health risks in our community
Our team is made up of Public Health Physicians, Nurses, Environmental Health Officers, Epidemiologists, Data Officers, a Medical Entomologist and Business Service Officers
We work with Brisbane North PHN, Brisbane City Council, Moreton Bay Regional Council, RADAR, as well as child care centres, residential aged care facilities, schools and laboratories
Services
Australian Bat Lyssavirus
Australian Bat Lyssavirus (ABLV) is a disease similar to rabies which causes a fatal neurological disease in humans.

Communicable Disease
The Communicable Disease Control team is responsible for prevention and control of notifiable conditions within Metro North Health area.

Elevated Blood-lead
Lead exposure can lead to serious health complications, from behavioural and learning difficulties in children, to foetal complications in pregnant women.

Environmental Health
Environmental Health is a key component of ‘public health’ and encompasses those aspects of human health determined by physical, chemical, biological and social factors in the environment.

Epidemiology/ Health Surveillance
Epidemiology and Health Surveillance aims to describe disease patterns in human populations and identify those groups of people most vulnerable to ill health.

Food Safety
Food safety standards ensure Australian food businesses produce food that is safe and suitable for humans to eat.

Immunisation Program
The Metro North Public Health Unit coordinates and supports the implementation of the National Immunisation Program for Queensland within the Metro North Health.

Medical Entomology
Medical Entomology is the study of insects (particularly mosquitoes) and other arthropods that facilitate human disease.

Sexual Health
The Metro North Public Health Unit has a key role in linking the many community-based organisations, care providers and education providers involved in sexual health.
