Patients at STARS are now able to enjoy a good book or magazine, courtesy of a new reading trolley service. The reading trolley is an initiative of the STARS Staff Council and supported by volunteers, Annie and Ken from the RBWH Foundation.

Reading has been shown to be good for our health – it can reduce stress, keep minds sharp, and improve sleep by providing a way to unwind before bedtime.

Reading can also prompt conversations between staff and fellow patients about a particular book or author.

RBWH Foundation volunteer Annie knows how valuable access to reading material can be for patients.

“A good story can help patients take their mind off things – they can disappear for a few hours,” said Annie.

“Reading provides a sense of escapism for patients, taking them to other places.

“So far, the favourite books have been spy novels or thrillers with authors like John Grisham and James Patterson popular requests.

“We also have puzzle books, word searches and adult colouring books for those who prefer these to reading.”

STARS Staff Council Co-Chair Ben Frost is very excited to introduce the reading trolley, which has been nicknamed ‘Bluey’, to patients.

“This initiative from the Staff Council brings the joy of reading right to our patients’ rooms, offering free books and magazines to brighten their days. We believe that stories can inspire hope and comfort, making the healing journey just a little bit easier,” said Ben.

The service is always looking for new reading materials. If you have new or near-new books, magazines, puzzle books or adult colouring books you can donate them to the STARS trolley service by leaving them at STARS ground floor reception.
