We love our Nurse Practitioners!

Off the back of National Nurse Practitioner (NP) Day, we asked our very own Melanie Proper just what makes our NPs so special? What makes them tick? Why do they love doing what they do?

“Being a Nurse Practitioner has allowed me to bring 19 years of pain management and 31 years of nursing experience together to deliver patient care across Royal Brisbane and Women’s Hospital. More importantly I get to extend my knowledge and skills to meet my patient’s needs—nurses love learning,” Melanie said.

“The care is holistic and I have close working relationships with medical, allied health and nursing colleges, where the team delivers the best health care for that patient. I am grateful for the acceptance and support of the NP role across the organisation.

“It’s so important to recognise the value NPs add to our health service. They offer a viable option for the management of the growing chronic disease burden and potential for connection to the community promoting preventative health messages.

“I’m very proud to call myself an NP and I feel so lucky to work alongside other talented NPs each and every day.”

There are 64 NPs in Metro North Hospital and Health Service, which represents an incredible 25 per cent of the state’s NPs and an eighth of the nation’s.
