Metro North Health has launched the inaugural Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Leadership Program, bringing together emerging leaders, mentors and senior executives to strengthen the future Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander workforce.
The year-long program will support Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander participants from across Metro North Health to build leadership capability, strengthen cultural identity and develop the skills needed to influence positive change across the health service. Participants will undertake workshops and professional development activities throughout 2026.
The program has been designed to grow the next generation of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander leaders and support a culturally strong workforce that delivers safe, responsive care for community.
Executive Director of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Health, Adjunct Professor Sherry Holzapfel, said investing in leadership development is critical to achieving long-term health equity outcomes.
“This program will help nurture and strengthen our workforce, supporting both current and emerging leaders to grow with confidence, capability and cultural integrity,” Professor Holzapfel said.
A key component of the program is receiving mentorship, with experienced leaders providing guidance and support throughout the participants’ leadership journey. Mentors will work alongside staff to strengthen their leadership capability, set goals and build skills in culturally safe environments.
“Mentoring goes beyond professional guidance. It is about creating culturally safe spaces, honouring identity and supporting people to lead in ways that are true to who they are,” Professor Holzapfel said.
The Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Leadership Program reflects Metro North Health’s ongoing commitment to growing its Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander workforce and supporting staff to step into leadership roles across the organisation. By investing in leadership development, Metro North Health is helping build a workforce that is culturally strong, confident and empowered to shape the future of healthcare for community.
