For former Royal Brisbane and Women’s Hospital patient Molly, there is plenty to celebrate, marking her fourth year in remission with a visit from this year’s Australian Idol winner, Royston.

Diagnosed at 19 years old with Hodgkin’s Lymphoma, Molly has experienced the benefits of the Sony YouCan Centre first hand.

Cancer care coordinator Janine, has seen how essential the Sony YouCan Centre is for the many young patients that come through their care.

“The Sony YouCan Centre has made a world of difference for our patients at the RBWH, catering to the unique needs of adolescents and young adults who are too old for paediatric services, yet too young for adult wards,” Janine said.

“It’s situated away from the wards with a more homely feel allowing our young patients a quiet space to catch up with friends and family, as well as connect with other young patients.

The centre is state-of-the-art and the largest of its kind in Australia, containing sanctuary study zones, relaxation spaces, an outdoor rooftop courtyard and its own kitchen and dining areas.

“The YouCan Centre brings a sense of calm and safety to young people,” Molly, said.

“It does not feel like a hospital.”

When Molly heard that this year’s Australian Idol winner, Royston, was stopping by for pizza and chats ahead of his performance at the Sony Foundation charity event Briss4Ward, she was excited to come in and meet the pop star.

“It’s so nice that other people are aware of what Sony are doing, and happy to give their time and be part of the community. Not just people with cancer.”
