National Blood Week celebrates everyday heroes who donate

Did you know that a new blood donor is needed every five minutes?
National Blood Donor Week during June is an annual event that recognises and celebrates blood, platelet and stem cell donors from across Australia.
World Blood Donor Day also in June raises awareness about the critical need for safe blood and plasma across the world.
For Prince Charles Hospital (TPCH) Blood Management Clinical Nurse Consultant Michelle Dwyer, the need for blood was constant.
“Each blood donation can save up to three lives, it really is that important,” Michelle said.
“Staff from TPCH have already made more than 100 blood donations this year, but we need to continue to encourage family, friends and the community to donate as well.
“Some people donate for someone they love or to be part of something bigger, while others do it it for the free snacks.
“No matter the reason, every donation makes a life-changing difference and we’re so grateful to have each one of them onboard.
“Blood has a limited shelf life, so hospitals such as TPCH need a steady supply of donors rather than occasional, large donation.
“Donated blood is used to support trauma patients or those with chronic illnesses like anaemia and cancer, so we use every drop wisely.
“Blood Management is one of eight National Safety and Quality Health Service (NSQHS) Standards, which recognises its importance in health services across the country.”
The Blood Management team hosted several events at TPCH during the hospital’s annual ‘Blood Week’.
“We had a display in the canteen for the public to learn more and hosted several in-service opportunities for staff to enhance their skills in blood management,” Michelle said.
“We also had fun by encouraging staff to wearing their brightest red shirt to work and decorate their ward or work area to help draw attention to Blood Week.”
