Redcliffe Hospital’s Maternity Services statement

Redcliffe Hospital has a proud tradition of safe and quality maternity care stretching back more than fifty years.  Patient safety is always our highest priority, and we take seriously the trust that mothers and families place in us each day.

We understand that some recent media coverage may have caused uncertainty or concern. If you’re a current patient and would like to talk to someone about this, please contact our Consumer Liaison Team on 07 3883 7043.

In February 2023, Redcliffe Hospital invited an independent expert to make an assessment of the entire maternity service. That Maternity Services Assessment looked into everything from clinical performance and outcomes, clinical governance, education and training, to staffing matters. The independent assessment made 37 recommendations.  Redcliffe Hospital has now implemented most of those recommendations – with work continuing of the others.

Read more about those recommendations and the progress Redcliffe Hospital has made so far.

Among the many improvements and positive changes made to Redcliffe Hospital’s maternity service are:

  • Additional staffing in some priority areas,
  • Expansion of the hospital’s Antenatal Day Assessment Service to provide a seven-day service.
  • A new midwifery Diabetic Educator, as well as a senior Midwifery Director.
  • An additional allocation of midwives to ensure all women have the support of a midwife in the Post Anaesthetic Care Unit for skin-to-skin contact with their baby following a caesarean section.
  • Changes to the governance and leadership of the service line in charge of the maternity unit.

These are all important changes that have improved the safety and quality of maternity care at Redcliffe Hospital.
