Youth mental health services receives welcome boost

Youth mental health in north Brisbane and Moreton Bay has received a welcome boost with a new Youth Step Up Step Down (YSUSD) facility opening in the Caboolture CBD.

The YSUSD provides a home-like environment for young people (aged 16-21) to recover from mental illness.

The facility provides short-stay services to young people who are becoming unwell or are in the early stages of recovery from an acute mental illness by offering a short period of additional assistance.

Admission to the Youth Step Up Step Down facility is available to existing consumers of the Metro North or Sunshine Coast mental health services and is arranged following a case discussion with a patient’s treating team.

Attending services far from home and away from family and friends can also be challenging for young people with mental illness.

The YSUSD program aims to combat these difficulties with a purpose-built facility that supports young people with their transition between acute and community- based health services.

The building features six bedrooms, each with an ensuite. There is also a shared living space and common areas including a kitchen, dining, laundry and outdoor spaces featuring a basketball court and gym.

The facility is an innovative mental health service that offers flexibility and focuses on recovery care. It is a collaborative partnership between Metro North and Mind Australia.

The Youth Step Up Step Down facility is located at 88-90 King street, Caboolture.
