Looking after yourself

Taking your baby home after a stay in the neonatal unit is a very exciting time but it can also be stressful. It is important that you take care of yourself. Some tips to help:

  • It’s ok to say no to visitors if you are tired or having a rough day.
  • Friends and family will often say “Is there anything I can do to help?” Most people are sincere when wanting to help, but don’t really know what you might need.  It’s ok to ask them to drop off a meal, hold the baby while you shower or to take other kids to the park for a play.  Have a think about what might best help you and don’t be shy to ask.
  • Try to get some sleep when you can. Everyone will say “sleep when the baby sleeps” but this is often easier said than done.  Try and be conscious of getting some additional rest, even if it means just putting your feet up.  Your baby won’t care that you haven’t folded the washing.
  • Eat well and drink lots of water.
  • Try to get outside for some fresh air and sunshine. Pop your baby in the pram and go for a walk around the block.
  • Be kind to yourself. Every day will be different, and you are doing a great job.
  • Be aware of your feelings, emotions, and mindset. Talk to your friends and family and link in with your GP or other health professionals if you have ongoing feelings of sadness, worry or anxiety.
