Emergency department referrals
All urgent cases must be discussed with the on call Registrar to obtain appropriate prioritisation and treatment. Contact through:

If any of the following are present or suspected, refer the patient to the emergency department (via ambulance if necessary) or seek emergent medical advice if in a remote region.
- Acute infection requiring admission or drainage
- Uncontrolled or disabling pain or severe uncontrolled dyspnoea
- New findings of symptomatic brain metastasis or leptomeningeal disease diagnosed in the community
- Suspected spinal cord compression or cauda equina syndrome
- Symptomatic malignant hypercalcaemia
- Patients with a visceral crisis from suspected but not confirmed malignant diagnosis (e.g. significant liver dysfunction from malignant infiltration)
- Febrile neutropenia
Breast Health at Royal Brisbane and Women’s Hospital (RBWH)
The RBWH Breast Health service are the leading specialists in diagnosis, monitoring and treatment for breast conditions in Queensland. The specialist team supports and cares for people who have been diagnosed with breast cancer and other breast conditions, using the most advanced technology, equipment and comprehensive services.
RBWH have a range of services including:
- Breast and Reconstructive Surgery
- Radiation Oncology
- Medical Oncology
- GP with Special Interest in Breast Health
- Support services
- Physiotherapists offer specialist care for patients, in particular patients with upper limb lymphoedema.
- Clinical Psychologists provide counselling and emotional support to you and your family
- Clinical Nurses specialising in breast health who will have close contact to you and your family during all phases of care.
GPs can refer to RBWH via GP Smart Referrals, searching Breast or General Surgery in the Condition and Specialty box or send a referral to Metro North Central Patient Intake.
Breast conditions are also treated at Redcliffe, The Prince Charles and Caboolture Hospitals and can be referred to under General Surgery.
Comprehensive Diagnostic Breast Clinic (located at TPCH)
The Comprehensive Diagnostic Breast Clinic offers diagnostic services for patients in the Metro North Catchment with a new breast symptom who require public care for assessment and diagnosis.
GPs can refer via GP Smart Referrals, searching Breast or General Surgery in the Condition and Specialty box, then selecting “Comprehensive Diagnostic Breast Clinic” from the service location list, or send a referral to Metro North Central Patient Intake.
BreastScreen Queensland
For routine mammograms and screening, contact BreastScreen Queensland directly for an appointment. BreastScreen services are not offered at hospital facilities.
