Gastroenterology & Hepatology are branches of Internal Medicine (usually practised together) that are concerned with the prevention, investigation , treatment of and research into illnesses involving the gastrointestinal tract and liver.
Training Overview
Entry requirements to Training Program
- Must pass Basic Physician Training (BPT) parts 1 and 2 prior to applying for an advanced training position
- Selection of Advanced Trainees is a centralised process for available positions in Queensland
Overview of Training Program
Three (3) years of advanced training under supervision of a practising Gastroenterologist at an accredited training site.
- 24 months core units
- 12 months non core (elective) units
The Prince Charles Hospital is an accredited training site for one (1) trainee for one (1) core training year
What rotations are recommended prior to applying for training
Broad experience in general medicine in addition to gastroenterology exposure
How to improve your chances of selection
Selection is competitive. Clinical experience in gastroenterology, presenting at and attending specialist meetings and undertaking relevant quality improvement and research projects demonstrate interest. A dedicated PHO year can help in achieving this.
