Queensland mum and Townsville nurse Melainie knew something wasn't quite right with her health, but it was only when she fell pregnant with her first child that she learned she had a rare lung disease.
Melainie is currently being cared for by the TPCH Transplant team as she waits for a lung transplant whilst also balancing raising her eight-month-old baby, Fletcher.
"Last year, I started struggling to breathe and after invasive investigations was diagnosed with pleuroparenchymal fibroelastosis, a very rare and progressive type of interstitial lung disease," she said.
"If that wasn’t enough of a shock, two days after receiving my diagnosis we found out I was eight weeks pregnant!
"Unfortunately, my lung function has continued to deteriorate, and I'm currently being worked up for a double lung transplant. As you can imagine, it’s a very surreal feeling when I have professionally cared for those in the Intensive Care Unit as they donated their organs."
While Melainie hasn't been listed for a lung transplant yet, she knows it’s just around the corner and understands the importance of raising awareness around registering and talking to your loved ones about organ and tissue donation.
It only takes one minute to register as an organ and tissue donor at donatelife.gov.au or through Medicare. Be the reason that someone like Melainie can get a second chance at life. 🩷
You will be under the BEST care there. Stay strong, Melanie.

As a CNCF within TPCH cardiology since 2016, Rachel says that she is still grateful every day for the opportunity to do what she loves.
"I have been nursing for almost 30 years, and have experience in Emergency, ICU, surgical; all of this experience and knowledge shapes how I teach people. However, this role is more than education, it's about inspiring, mentoring and supporting nurses to become the best they can be," Rachel said.
"That might mean guiding a new graduate through their first year, helping staff build their confidence in clinical practice or encouraging someone to step into a leadership role.
"I have met so many new grads that are now Nurse Unit Managers, Clinical Nurses and Nurse Practitioners and that is so rewarding to see knowing I was able to play a small part in shaping them."

From Belgium to Brisbane, this pair of psychiatrists have traded a "rainy and grey" climate, for a hot and sunny one. 🌞
Meeting during their time at university, Dr Catherine and Dr Hendrik-Jan have been working as psychiatrists in Belgium since 2022. In the last few months and accompanied by their two children, they have moved across the world and have found themselves at TPCH.
"I almost had the opportunity to study in England, however that fell through. Then I met Catherine and decided I wouldn't reapply the next year," Dr Hendrink-Jan said.
"I always had in mind that I wanted to live abroad, so when we learnt of the opportunity that they were looking for medical professionals, I twisted Catherine's arm and now we are here."
"We visited in September and The Prince Charles really spoke to us, it had that friendly and familiar vibe and Brisbane is a very family friendly city," Dr Catherine said.
"Everyone has been so welcoming, we are still both learning a new healthcare organisation but that's why we wanted to move, for the challenge and to experience something new."

From Belgium to Brisbane, this pair of psychiatrists have traded a "rainy and grey" climate, for a hot and sunny one. 🌞
Meeting during their time at university, Dr Catherine and Dr Hendrik-Jan have been working as psychiatrists in Belgium since 2022. In the last few months and accompanied by their two children, they have moved across the world and have found themselves at TPCH.
"I almost had the opportunity to study in England, however that fell through. Then I met Catherine and decided I wouldn't reapply the next year," Dr Hendrink-Jan said.
"I always had in mind that I wanted to live abroad, so when we learnt of the opportunity that they were looking for medical professionals, I twisted Catherine's arm and now we are here."
"We visited in September and The Prince Charles really spoke to us, it had that friendly and familiar vibe and Brisbane is a very family friendly city," Dr Catherine said.
"Everyone has been so welcoming, we are still both learning a new healthcare organisation but that's why we wanted to move, for the challenge and to experience something new."
