Meet the Building, Engineering and Maintenance Services (BEMS) team—the behind-the-scenes heroes who kept Metro North Health running when Cyclone Alfred hit Brisbane. 💪
With warnings ahead of the weekend, Director of Building Maintenance Services Adrian and his team of 250 sprang into action, securing sites and ensuring critical systems were protected.
"Initially, we were concerned about medical gases, power and air conditioning, so we made sure those systems were under control. We had our diesel tanks ready for generators and teams prepared to come into the hospitals to look after our patients, staff and infrastructure," Adrian said.
At The Prince Charles Hospital (TPCH), Chris—Engineering Maintenance manager—and his team prepped tirelessly to secure buildings, gather supplies like plywood and plastic, and assemble tradespeople to respond immediately.
“Everyone did an amazing job. When disaster happens like this, we all take our trade hats or managements hats off and get involved. Everyone chips in,” Chris said.
The team arrived Saturday morning, bracing for impact which didn’t arrive until later that night. Power went down four times, affecting boilers, chillers and air conditioning. Water leaked into ceilings, lights and even lifts, creating more challenges.
For 72 hours, they worked through exhaustion, adapting to the ever-changing situation and making sure hospitals remained safe and operational.
"I am really proud and really impressed with the BEMS teams across our sites. Everyone did an amazing job," Adrian said.
A huge thank you to the BEMS team for their dedication and teamwork during Cyclone Alfred. Your hard work and dedication is appreciated! 👏
