Secure Mental Health Rehabilitation Unit
The Secure Mental Health Rehabilitation Unit (SMHRU) provides a safe and structured environment and 24-hour clinical support for people with persistent and disabling symptoms of mental illness.
The service aims to promote an individual’s recovery, maximising their strengths and potential by providing multidisciplinary specialist consultation, assessment, collaborative treatment and discharge planning with evidence-based clinical interventions for persons over the age of 18 years.

- a specialised secure environment
- contemporary, high quality and multidisciplinary rehabilitation services to assist consumers to recover from mental illness and to gain skills needed to live in a less restrictive setting.
How to access this service
Admission to the Secure Rehabilitation Inpatient Unit is limited to those who are open to a mental health service, following case discussion by the referral committee. Your mental health clinician will discuss the referral package with you.
Frequently asked questions
The average time that people spend in hospital is 12 months, but some people stay less and others longer. Ask your doctor when you can expect to be discharged.
Smoking is not permitted in or within 5 metres of any Queensland Health hospital. You will have free nicotine replacement therapy available to you during your stay. You are not permitted to have cigarettes in the inpatient ward. If you bring cigarettes to the hospital they will be stored and returned to you on discharge if you ask for them.
During the early part of your stay you will be required to stay on the ward until your community access is discussed with your treating team.
Yes, family are welcome to visit the ward. Before the visit, please discuss this with your nurse so arrangements can be made.
