Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Family Fun Day to mark NAIDOC Week
Metro North Hospital and Health Service Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Health Unit Director Paul Drahm said NAIDOC Week was an important time of the year to celebrate Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander history, culture and achievements.
A fantastic family fun day was held at St Columban’s College in Caboolture as part of Metro North Hospital and Health Service NAIDOC Week C
elebrations (8-15 July 2018).
The 2018 NAIDOC theme – Because of her, we can! – celebrates the invaluable contributions Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander women have made, and continue to make, to our communities, our families, our rich history and to our nation.
“The NAIDOC Week Family Fun Day provided an opportunity to enjoy some food and family fun, and join together as one to celebrate our unique and diverse Indigenous culture in Queensland,” Mr Drahm said.
“This year, the event was better than ever with more than 2,000 people coming together from across North Brisbane to enjoy some great activities.
“A free community BBQ lunch was held and plenty of activities were enjoyed by children including face and rock painting, an animal farm, jumping castle, sports and rock climbing.”
The event also featured a Welcome to Country, Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander dancing, art and cultural workshops and over 70 health promotional stalls.
NAIDOC Week provides an important opportunity for our staff, community members, local elders, patients and visitors to all come together to recognise the contributions that Indigenous Australians make to our country and our society.
The NAIDOC Week Family Fun Day featured a consumer engagement session ‘Conversations with Metro North’ allowing patients and families to provide service feedback and suggestions to Metro North Hospital and Health Service Board Members and Hospital Executives.
Mr Drahm said the event also saw a special visit from the Queensland Reds.
