Ben’s equipped for patient care

Ben Potts enjoys the challenging of solving complex medical equipment problems

As a Senior Biomedical Technician with Biomedical Technology Services at for eight years, with the last 12 months at The Prince Charles Hospital (TPCH), Ben is responsible for managing the entire life cycle of medical equipment which includes acceptance testing, maintenance and repairs, all the way through to retirement and disposal.

The trained technician, who possesses an Associates Degree in Electrical/Electronics Engineering, works as part of a team of 14 technicians who handle hundreds of different types of equipment each week including ventilators, anaesthetic machines, infusion pumps and vital signs monitors.

Ben said that having fully functional medical equipment is a critical part of delivering safe, high-quality patient care.

“Some of the equipment we service is very complex and requires in-depth troubleshooting and servicing, from regular leak and pressure calibration using sophisticated measuring equipment all the way to small component repairs and replacements,” Ben said.

“When I come across a particular problem with a machine, it can sometimes take many hours of work and testing to ensure there are no problems when the equipment is returned to the clinical areas for use.

“I thoroughly enjoy the challenge of fixing problems which I know has a positive impact on patient care.”

A father of two, Ben finds great reward in seeing patients receive treatment on equipment he has serviced.

“My eldest daughter was born six weeks premature, so seeing a baby receiving care in neonatal areas especially hits home for me,” he said.

“It is extremely satisfying knowing my skills are helping patients receive the highest level of care possible.”
