New medical imaging service coming to Brighton Health Campus

The Brighton Health Campus is preparing for one of its most significant infrastructure projects in recent years, with a new medical imaging department set to transform how patients across north Brisbane access high‑quality diagnostic care.

As part of the Statewide MRI and CT Expansion Program, the purpose‑built department will introduce a full suite of contemporary imaging modalities including CT, MRI, ultrasound, general x‑ray, with onsite radiology reporting bringing advanced diagnostics closer to home for the Brighton, Sandgate and Redcliffe communities and their surrounds.

Project Delivery Clinical Lead Nikki Gorham said the service will reduce travel to larger sites.

“For many of our patients, accessing advanced imaging currently means travelling to larger hospitals often when they’re unwell, fatigued or juggling multiple appointments,” Nikki said.

“By creating imaging capacity at Brighton, we’re reducing travel, easing pressure on families and making sure people receive timely, accurate diagnostics without having to navigate busy hospital precincts.”

Redcliffe Hospital Director of Medical Imaging Tanya Oliver said the department will support growing demand across the region and help relieve pressure on existing imaging services, while improving the patient experience through shorter wait times and efficient access to results.

“This is a tangible step toward care closer to home. It strengthens our network and increases our self‑sufficiency as the region continues to grow,” Tanya said.

Planning for the department will be grounded in strong collaboration with clinicians, operational teams, consumers and community partners.

“Our staff and community will shape this service from the ground up,” Tanya said.

“Their insights into workflow, patient needs and cultural safety are helping us design a space that’s efficient, calming and future‑focused, somewhere people feel welcome and supported from the moment they arrive.”

Clinicians say the benefit will be felt across multiple specialties.

Redcliffe Hospital’s MRI Team Leader Daniel McAlister said the combination of CT, MRI, ultrasound and x‑ray at one site, supported by onsite reporting, will streamline care pathways and speed up decision‑making.

“We’ll be able to move patients through their diagnostic journey faster and more efficiently, which is better for patients and for our clinical teams,” Daniel said.

As Redcliffe Hospital and all Metro North sites expand their clinical services, demand for diagnostic imaging has increased sharply. The Brighton facility will help balance activity across all Metro North sites.

“Sharing the workload means we can reduce wait times, improve throughput and better match capacity with demand,” Tanya said. “Ultimately, it helps us get the right test to the right patient at the right time.”

The new service will be managed by Redcliffe Hospital. Staff development and future job opportunities are also part of the picture, recruiting a variety of medical imaging specialists, nurses and administrative staff.

“This is a great opportunity for people who want to work with contemporary technology in a purpose‑built environment,” Tanya said.

“It’s also an investment in our people, supporting career pathways and helping us attract and retain talent.”
