Sandwich skills the key to Ida’s success

Few people could boast the sandwich making skills of 94-year-old Ida Moffett.

Ida has been making sandwiches for Kilcoy Hospital Fete for the past 20 years and is a treasured member of the Kilcoy Hospital Auxiliary.

For Ida, it’s the joy of working together and feeding the community that keeps her going.

“I’m motivated by the love of the company of working together in a kitchen environment, and the fun that can be had as well as being able to help people out,” Ida said.

“Working together to help others raises a real community spirit.”

With decades of experience, Ida’s sandwiches are a fete speciality. Although the most popular sandwiches are ham, corned meat or egg, she’s surprised at the requests for one in particular.

“The one that gets most interest in is the cheese and carrot, however it is definitely not my cup of tea,” Ida said.

Ida’s iconic sandwich making earned her a certificate recently for her years of service, but her dedication for volunteering is deep rooted in the Kilcoy community, a place she’s lived for more than half her life.

“I’ve worked for the abattoir and cooked at the Stanley Hotel first and have always been an active member in the community,” she said.

“I’ve spent a lot of time volunteering at the ‘Race Ladies’ at the Kilcoy Races canteen, have done refreshments for the Kilcoy Social Dance group, supported Returned Service League functions and Meals on Wheels.”

Ida and her volunteer colleagues have raised significant funds for the Kilcoy Hospital Auxiliary to support the hospital and local community.
