Movie magic on the horizon for Gannet House cinema lovers

The King and I will be one of those favourate movies to be played in the new Gannet House cinema.

From Game of Thrones to the King and I, the Sound of Music to Thor, all the ‘movie stars’ made an appearance at the grand opening of the Gannet House Cinema.

Specialised Aged Care Nursing Director Belinda Sawtell said the grand opening was an amazing event that captured the glitz and glamour of Hollywood and Bollywood.

“Staff and residents joined the fun and marked the important occasion by dressing up as their favourate movie or television characters,” Belinda said.

“Our residents can now watch their favourite movie or sporting event, or a current blockbuster more privately, away from the common areas, in the new cinema.

“The new entertainment area will also enhance our regular and highly popular Sunday afternoon “Oldie but a Goodie’ movie sessions.

“The amazing space will create some great memories for our residents and their families, and bring back some great times watching blockbusters from the past.”

The cinema, which follows Cooinda House’s cinema opening in 2023, features comfortable reclining chairs and lounges, surround sound, cinematic curtains and sound proofing, mood lighting, as well as a massive 86-inch LED television screen with cinema quality multimedia equipment.

Gannet House resident and movie buff Elsje was thrilled to open the new cinema at Gannet Hosue.

“Families are also very excited to have movie days with their loved ones and be able to cook popcorn in the new resident kitchen,” Belinda said.

“This new kitchen is for residents and families to have family get togethers and prepare their own meals. It is already being used by residents and families on Sundays.”

The cinema was officially opened by popular Gannet House resident Elsje who can’t wait to experience the surround sound and lighting when she watches her favourite movie Singin’ in the Rain.

“I love the movies,” Elsje said. “I have been collecting movies for over 40 years now and have a broad range of films covering many genres. I have collected over 500 movie titles so far.”

Belinda said planning and transforming the space was made easier by the experience of building the Cooinda House cinema last year. She thanked the Building, Engineering and Maintenance team who did the work.

“Residents and families are spoilt for choice at the residential aged care facility as we are also located on the scenic Moreton Bay foreshore and everyone has access to spacious outdoor garden areas,” Belinda said.

Gannet House, located at Brighton Health Campus, is a 60-bed residential aged care facility which provides secure and specialised care.

“We value our residents and seek to enrich their lives by creating an environment of compassion, respect and understanding, and wonderful entertainment areas such as the new cinema and resident kitchen,” Belinda said.
