Norfolk Island children supported through new outreach program

A new paediatric outreach service from The Prince Charles Hospital (TPCH) is providing more access to specialist services for the children of Norfolk Island.

The service, which started in October 2023, allows children to access telehealth services with a paediatrician, occupational therapist, speech therapist or psychologist based at TPCH.

“There are currently two streams, with children being referred to the paediatric medical model, or the allied health model,” said General Paediatrician Dr Irfan Khan.

“We support children with medical, as well as developmental needs, and provide guidance to local General Practitioners who are doing a fantastic job.”

While the total population of the island is only about 2,000, there is a further need for medical support.

“Our aim is to visit Norfolk Island in the new year and gain an understand of what support is there, and tailor our support based on what else is needed,” said Dr Khan.

“Given that there are children with medical and developmental needs, it is beneficial to have a specialist paediatric service from TPCH.”
