Our services
We run daily clinics specialising in a wide range of conditions including:
- diabetes
- thyroid disease and thyroid cancer
- metabolic bone disorders
- lipid disorders
- general endocrine and metabolic conditions including adrenal, ovarian, testicular and infertility disorders.
How to access this service
To access this service, your GP or medical practitioner will need to send a referral letter to the hospital.
Your referral
Please ask your GP to refer you to one of the RBWH endocrinology specialists (this is called a named referral). When you attend our clinics your care will be supervised by one specialist. Having a named referral ensures continuity of care and establishes a good working relationship between your general practitioner and your endocrinologist.
If there is a waiting list, you will receive a confirmation letter and be advised on what to do next. If there is no waiting list, you will receive an appointment booking letter or we will contact you to arrange a suitable time for your appointment.
If you confirm a new case appointment but fail to attend, we will not automatically offer another appointment. You will need to go back to your referring doctor to get a new referral.

- Health Care Card and/or concession card (if you have one)
- Current medications (prescription, over the counter and herbal medicine)
- Relevant x-rays, scans or any other test results or reports
- Glasses, hearing and mobility aids

- Any special items listed on your letter
- WorkCover claim number (if relevant)
- Snacks, a drink or money to buy refreshments
- Something to read or do while you wait
What to expect
Your referral
We actively screen all referral letters when we receive them. If we can provide initial advice about your management, we will write to your referring doctor. If we provide appropriate advice about your management to your doctor, you may not need to come in for an appointment.
Before your appointment
Based on the information that your referring doctor provides, we may ask you to have a number of tests completed before your appointment. It is important that you have these tests done before your appointment. This will enable us to provide appropriate management advice at the time of your initial appointment, rather than needing to order additional tests, which could delay your treatment.

Health professionals
The Department of Endocrinology and Diabetes provides tertiary level outpatient care and inpatient support for patients with endocrine conditions. This includes:
- Combined neuroendocrine service for pituitary disease.
- Diabetes and endocrine disorders of pregnancy.
- Thyroid cancer.
- Endocrine disorders of malignancy.
- Metabolic bone disorders.
- Disorders of lipid metabolism.
We also provide telehealth consultations to patients in central Queensland from Gympie to Mackay and west to the border, which greatly improves patients’ access to our service. We have one of the busiest endocrine telehealth services in Australia.
Our integrated diabetes service includes:
- Consultants, educators, dietitians and podiatrists.
- Assistance from exercise physiologists and psychologists.
- Insulin pump therapy for patients and support before and after commencement of treatment.
- Continuous 7-day blood glucose monitoring studies to assist in the optimal management of patients with diabetes.
