Dr Philip Chan

Senior Radiation Oncologist, Cancer Care Services, RBWH

Dr Philip Chan became a Fellow in the Royal Australian & New Zealand College of Radiologists as a Radiation Oncologist in 2001 having been trained at the then Queensland Radium Institute in Brisbane, Australia. Via an international competitive process, he was awarded a Clinical and later a Research Fellowship at the prestigious Princess Margaret Hospital in Toronto, Canada where he spent the subsequent four and a half years in the hypoxia translational program and developing their technical translational program for gynaecological cancers. The work there has rewarded him 9 peer-reviewed journals and book chapter publications along with 10 oral and 23 poster presentations in national and internationally held oncology meetings. He utilised these skills to start the precision radiation program in a new Cancer Centre near Toronto where he was appointed as staff specialist with cross-appointment at Queen’s University, Ontario, Canada as adjunct Assistant Professor.

Since October 2010, he has returned to Brisbane and holds a full-time senior radiation oncologist position at Royal Brisbane & Women’s Hospital (RBWH). He is also appointed to the University of Queensland, School of Medicine as a Senior Lecture. His interests broadly aim to improve the treatment of cancer patients by adapting advancements in radiation therapy technology like image guidance and motion management and maximising tumour eradication and minimising treatment toxicities. He co-ordinates the Radiation Oncology Research Group and is an active member of the Trans-Tasman Radiation Oncology Group.

  • Stereotactic radiotherapy in lung and metastatic diseases
  • Genito-urinary cancers.
