Anaesthesia and Perioperative Medicine
Overview
The Department of Anaesthesia and Perioperative Medicine provides specialist perioperative services including pre-operative patient assessment and optimisation, intraoperative anaesthesia and perioperative care for a wide range of surgical, interventional and diagnostic procedures, as well as acute pain and obstetric pain management.
After the successful development and opening of the Centre for Excellence and Innovation in Anaesthesia in June 2017, we have continued to deliver best-practice outcomes for our patients through evidence-based practice, high quality education, continuous quality improvement and research.
Research
The Department of Anaesthesia and Perioperative Medicine Research Interest Group in Anaesthesia (RIGA), is committed to providing relevant, up-to-date research to advance optimal anaesthetic care for all patients.
The department facilitates a research culture providing mentorship, group support and guidance with all research ideas, including clinical trial project management and execution, research requirements and publishing.
Our research continues to grow in areas such as perioperative and intraoperative care, intraoperative cell salvage, pharmacokinetic studies, chronic pain and anaemia, bariatric anaesthesia, antibiotic studies, vascular access, simulation and 3D modelling projects.
The department produces many publications each year; supervises post-graduate research students; participates in departmental led research projects whilst also collaborates with national and international universities and research institutions on multi-centre clinical trials focusing on improving patient outcomes pre and post-surgery.
