Rehabilitation Engineering Centre

The Rehabilitation Engineering Centre is the only professional engineer-led service of its kind in Queensland and one of only a few in Australia and works to improve the quality of life of Queenslanders with disabilities.

We can provide advice, build or modify assistive technology and mobility equipment to suit patients’ personal needs.

Our services include:

  • Independent advice on rehabilitation equipment
  • Designing and manufacturing custom equipment
  • Identifying technology requirements for people with complex equipment needs
  • Education about rehabilitation technology solutions
  • Research and development in rehabilitation technology.

The Rehabilitation Engineering Centre team are professional engineers and technicians with experience in specific fields. Our team will talk to you about your goals and provide a personalised solution.

Our service is highly specialised, and is not age or diagnosis specific and provides:

  • Wheelchair seating design and fabrication for clients with severe physical disability
  • Interface Pressure Mapping for clients with propensity for pressure sores
  • Design and fabrication of custom pressure relief seat cushions and backrests for clients with or susceptible to pressure sores.
  • Customisation of wheeled mobility devices
  • Custom controls for power wheelchairs and/or positioning of controls for optimum function and performance
  • Advice on assistive technology options
  • Vehicular transportation and transportation safety advice for people with disabilities
  • Interpretation and application of Australian Standards and ISO standards related to equipment for people with disabilities
  • Inspection and evaluation services for certain medical and rehabilitation equipment.

The services are provided under the management of a registered professional engineer and in accordance with the requirements of the Therapeutic Goods Administration. The team are also specialists in personalised seating support.

Access to services

Patients who have complex assistive technology needs, the team can discuss how to achieve individual goals.

The Rehabilitation Engineering Centre has relocated to Ground Floor, Surgical, Treatment and Rehabilitation Service (STARS) at 296 Herston Road, Herston.

NDIS Funded Services

The Rehabilitation Engineering Centre is a registered NDIS provider. Registration Number: 4050008612.

They can provide advice about the types of equipment and personalised modifications patients can access through the service. The service is primarily Queensland focussed, but there is some capacity to offer an interstate service.

If you have a registered plan with the National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS) you can use your plan funding to purchase services from the Rehabilitation Engineering Centre (REC). This document explains how to use your NDIS funding to access our services.
