COVID-19 changes to visiting our hospitals

Updated 8 April 2022

From 11.00am AEST 20 January 2022, tighter visitor restrictions are in place for public and private hospitals across Queensland to ensure the ongoing safety of patients and staff.

There is now a maximum of two visitors permitted for each patient in most patient settings, with tighter restrictions in areas such as ED and post op.

These restrictions will not restrict access to health care for anyone. Everyone will have access to care or treatment regardless of their vaccination status. Anyone making healthcare decisions for a patient, for example a parent or carer, will also be permitted to accompany them.

Please check the Queensland Health hospital visitors information for specific entry criteria before you arrive.

Unvaccinated visitors

Unvaccinated or not fully vaccinated visitors may be allowed to enter the hospital if they meet the criteria for:

  • A parent, guardian or carer of a patient under the age of 16 years
  • Supporting a patient at the end of life
  • A support person for a patient during childbirth
  • A carer or support person
  • Supporting a patient in an emergency situation.
Unvaccinated visitors can apply for hospital entry by completing a Visitor Approval Form. Requests will be assessed on a case-by-case by the treating facility. Conditions apply to approved visitors.

Visitors who meet one or more of the following criteria will need to apply for hospital entry by completing an exemption through the Chief Health Officer.

  • Exceptional reasons or an end of life visit

Double COVID-19 vaccination required to attend our facilities for work

The Chief Health Officer’s  Workers in Healthcare Direction mandates any worker, who attends a Metro North facility or campus for any reason, must be double-vaccinated for COVID-19 from 15 December 2021. This includes attending our campus to undertake a service, meeting or to facilitate any kind of work, even if it is not in a clinical setting. Please familiarise yourself with the current directive and speak to your relevant Metro North contact about any questions you may have, before attending our sites.

Virtual Visits

We encourage virtual visits for our patients. Virtual visits are a great way to stay connected to your loved ones and support them during their stay in our facilities The information on our virtual visits page will help get you set up to make virtual visits.
