Orthopaedics

Physiotherapy

Orthopaedic management involves your bones, joints, muscles, tendons and ligaments.

Orthopaedic surgeries at RBWH can either be planned elective operations, for example a Total Knee Replacement (TKR) or after an accident or trauma whereby you injure a bone or muscle.

Some injuries or conditions may not require surgery and can be managed in a splint, case or crutches to help you recover.

Physiotherapy for any Orthopaedic case is aimed to improve your movement (walking or transfer to wheelchair) and start you with exercises to help with range of movement and strengthening.  Often your first goal is to get well enough to go home from hospital and continue your Physiotherapy as an outpatient or with home visits.

Before your surgery (if your surgery is planned)

You may have an online (Telehealth) appointment with our physiotherapy team if your surgery involves:

  • Your joints (such as knees and hips)
  • Your spine (your neck and back)

This appointment is to gather background information to help our Physiotherapy staff help you and to answer any questions you may have relating to movement and exercises after your surgery.

What to bring to hospital

  • Comfortable closed-in shoes or slippers
  • Clothes that are comfortable for walking and exercise
  • Your usual walking aid (example: walking stick, wheelie-walker)
